Tasting Notes
This Port was crafted for those who love big jammy Zinfandels and Zinfandel ports, yet covet the more refined flavors of a Tawny. You’ll find intense aromas of peaches, dried apricots and blackberry pie surrounded by toasted almonds and aromas of sherry and coffee. The palate is just as exciting, offering more huge fruit, a bit of earth and a striking balance between sweetness, acidity, and alcohol. The finish lasts seemingly forever, offering loads of dried apricots. Vintage 2000 The 2000 Vintage in the Cucamonga Valley was hot and dry as it usually is. These 100+ year old vines are dry farmed, not receiving a drop of water as they struggle in the deep sandy soils. At harvest acids were a bit lower than usual, probably due to several heat spikes during the summer. The four vineyards used in this blend were picked within two weeks of normal. Winemaking All of the grapes used for this port were picked between 26 and 28 Brix. Each lot was allowed to start fermentation and watched closely until the Brix dropped to about 13. At this point brandy was added to the wines to arrest their fermentations and create the start of our port. After blending and settling the wines were racked to older barrels kept in a room that is not insulated, allowing for temperature extremes of between 45 and 100+ degrees. For more than three years the wines were subjected to the winter and summer weather, speeding their maturation and creating the Tawny like characters found in this Zinfandel port.
